Window hardware is one of the most common failures, most hardware lasts well although some can only last for a few years before they start to become worn. Worn hardware inevitably fails/breaks causing you to have windows that either don't open or don't lock properly, there are also often cases of these failures due to a window not operating properly e.g.
- The sash/vent has dropped and isn't square in the frame
- The sash/vent isn't adjusted correctly and the lock strikes/hits the frame when opened and closed
Sometimes a failed or broken hinge may be the issue leaving a gap between sash/vent and frame when closed, this causes a draft and more outside noise being heard even when the window is closed, this can also lead to the failure of the lock.
Locks that are difficult to operate are usually due to one or more of the problems above and also put more strain on the handle when you try to operate the lock , this can and will eventually lead to the handle failing/breaking.

Doors
Door Hardware failures are generally confined to handles and locks, handles become worn and loose quite quickly and this is usually due to the lock being too stiff to operate, sometimes one will fail before the other, but on occasions they will both fail at the same time.
Failed handles or locks will leave you with a door that either can't be opened or a door which will open and close but won't lock.
Most handle and lock failures are due to the door not being square in it's frame or incorrectly adjust putting strains on all the other hardware in use.
Ofcourse there are also times when a door can be out of square and badly adjusted yet the handles and locks seem to work properly, we would strongly advise in this scenario that you have your doors squared up and adjusted properly before any further problems arise.
